  • Safari Tours into Wilpattu National Park (click here for Park Entrance Fees and Safari Jeep Costs).
    • The day trip is long, you leave at 5:45 am and return at 6:30 pm with a break at around 11:00 am to 2:00 pm in the afternoon. There is a good chance (no gurantees) of seeing Elephant, Leopard and Sloth Bear (if very lucky). Monkeys (Langur (grey or fully Black)) and Macques (Brown) Jackal, Wild boar, Mongoose, Wild Buffalo, Crocodile and many birds including the Serpent eagle have a much higher probability of been seen.

  • Tuk-Tuk thru Wilpattu Park (40 km each way) .
    • For those who find the Park Entrance Fees and Safari Jeep costs too expensive we can arrange a tuk-tuk ride thru Puttalam -Mannar gravel road which goes thru the park. Good likelihood of seeing Elephants, Monkeys and Crocodiles and many birds but unlikely to see leopards and bear.

  • Hike/Picnic along the Kala Oya River and Beach (4 km).
    • A day trip by tuk-tuk to Kala-Oya River and have an relaxing time on a shaded beach, with a swim in the river.
You can either take a packed lunch or come back for lunch. For the beer drinkers, please remember to bring it along from Puttalam. The nearest beer store is 10 km away and has no selection to speak of.

      Kala-Oya River Beach Kala-Oya River

  • Swim in Puttalam Lagoon/Dutch Bay on Secluded Beach (5 km)
    • Take a tuk-tuk to miles of secluded beach on the Puttalam Lagoon. We suggest a late afternoon/evening dip unless of course you want to work on your tan. The beach has dense vegetation upto a few meters from the water line and provides a good chance to photo fishing eagles.

      Lagoon Beach Lagoon Beach

  • River ride up the KalaOya River and Picnic on Secluded Beach
    • If you like to have a shaded river beach all to your self, then take a boat ride along the Kala-Oya and pick a beach to your self. If you wish you could also have a swim in the Puttalam Lagoon and walk miles of secluded beach.
You can either take a packed lunch or come back for lunch. For the beer drinkers, please remember to bring it along from Puttalam. The nearest beer store is 10 km away and has no selection to speak of.

  • A Dip at Nearby Anicut (Canal) (1.5 km)
    • After a long day have a quick dip at the anicut nearby about 5 mins by tuk tuk.
There are rumors that the feeder lake is to be dredged, so its possible this might not be an option in Sept/Oct 2014.

Elavankulam (also spelled Eluvamkulam, Eluwankulama on Google Maps) is the last town just before the Wilpattu National Park entrance on the Puttlam Mannar Road. Its last town after Wanathavillu.

Eluvamkulam is a frontier town, but still centrally located. Its a 15 minute boat ride to Kalpitiya from Gangewadiya (5 km from Eluvankulam).

Its 70 km to Mannar with The Doric, Arippu Fort on the way. 152 km to Pooneryn/Sangupiddy Bridge and 180 km to Jaffna Town.

To Madu Church it is about 80 km.

We recommend Rough Guide to Sri Lanka for broader price range of accomodation and detailed description of locales.
